Solaqua Energy Systems: Soy Systems

Spray Foam for Insulation

Save Money, Save Heat & Breath Easy

More and more homeowners and business owners are choosing to insulate their homes and business’ with environmentally friendly soy spray foam insulation.  Lower heating bills, higher heat retention, and no VOC’s or allergens are just some of the advantages of this unique product.

Fiberglass vs. Spray Foam – the difference is permeability.

Open cell soy foam insulation can reach an R-value of 3.5-3.7 per inch.  This means that in a typical 6" studded house the R-value can reach up to 22, about the same as typical fiberglass insulation.   However, in discussing insulation effectiveness, more important than R value is permeability.  Permeability is defined as gaps that air can move freely through an object.  Permeability is one of the main reasons for heat loss in a typical home with loose insulation. In the case of the fiberglass, an R value of 19 after permeability consideration may only be an R value of 10 or less in reference to actual heat loss.   One way a homeowner can see permeability first hand in a home is to hold a candle up to electrical outlets and light fixtures.  If the flames move about, this means that the home is losing heat through permeation.

Spray foam – No Gaps Means Less Heat Loss

Prior to installing typical fiberglass insulation, a vapor barrier is installed in the form of tape or plastic sheet. Over time, the fiberglass settles and the tape releases, leaving gaps. On the other hand, spray foam adheres to the wood and brick to form a complete sheet, expanding into every void and crevice with NO GAPS  and without any permeation.

No Gaps – No Mold

Another advantage of spray foam insulation is that it eliminates air and moisture infiltration.  With no entry, mold cannot take hold and multiply.   Dust, pollen and other pollutants are kept out as well.  Soy spray foam has no nutritive value so it does not support pests and insects.

Long Term Advantages

Spray foam may cost more than typical fiberglass insulation, but the money that is saved in heating and cooling costs will continue throughout the life of the house, creating cost savings that far exceeding the original investment.
