Spray Foam Financing
How much does spray foam cost? A much asked question. As you
may know the insulation capabilities and the life of a system are all relative
to cost. If a system itself is "cost", this might be more than average.
If heat and cooling is "cost" than foam is very cost effective.
It is calculated that residential insulation can save up to 40% or more on
heating bills with a complete restoration of expenses in 4 years or less.
Some see faster restoration of expenses and some see a slower rate. Either
way, anyone can recognize the savings. Also, based on the oil crisis, many
states have implemented rebates and tax deduction for homes that are more
energy efficient. Spray foam can be a start to more energy efficient home.
Regardless, in comparison to fiberglass insulation one can expect an increase
of 30-40% in cost. Less for newer fiberglass that does not have asbestos
glues. But, can one really compromise effectiveness over cost?
Typically
open cell foam is priced either by the board foot (a piece of foam that is
12" long by 12"wide and 1" thick) or stud fill (price per 4" stud, price per
6" stud, etc.). A lot of the time windows are included in the price because
of preparation around the windows. In open cell applications waste is
produced so, that too would be included in the price per foot. A
residential application would take approx. no more than a day or two to
spray and within a 30 min. be ready for occupation with proper ventilation. This makes for a very quick step in the building process which is very cost effective.
A new foam roof can save money on heating as well. A lot of contractors
are turning to this application not only for the insulation properties but,
the ease of applying the foam. A new roof can take weeks to tear down and
install making for large labor overhead. 5-6 guys working long hours in hot
and humid conditions. Not to mention keeping the kettle hot enough for the
tar. A lot of the time a spray applied roof can be done with no more than
two workers. This is very cost effective for the contractor which means
that most of the time savings reach the customer as well. Maintenance is very
cheap as well. A spray applied roof typically is only repaired not
replaced. A hole in the roof can be fixed with as little as a can of closed
cell foam in a can. Not a contractor that is going to charge you a small
fortune to repair a pen hole. A roof is usually priced also by the board
foot. A typical roof will be between 1.5-2.5 in. With a good weather proof
coating it should last a life time.
So should cost be as important as effectiveness and lighter maintenance?
Again, all prices are relative when one steps back and looks at the whole
picture. At Solaqua we try to step back and view the picture as a whole and
not what's cheaper now. Our goal is to see that this great earth is
preserved at no cost to our depleting resources. A great step in energy
saving is great insulation.
