Global energy is primarily still obtained from fossil fuels, but some forward thinking nations have begun to move towards sustainable energy options as goals for primary energy production. The United States is still far from that realization, but as more and more people become interested and educated in renewable solutions to energy production that deficit will be narrowed continuously. Below is a diagram of domestic energy production sources compiled for the year of 2000.

As seen, all renewables besides hydro power comprise a shockingly minute component of total domestic energy production. The global make-up of renewable energy sources are telling as well. Below is a diagram depicting the total renewable component of global energy production (16.7%) and what the break down of that energy is. It is seen from the diagram that renewables such as PV only comprise 1.2% of total energy.
